Our Baltic Bonanza: Vilnius

“Bizarre, beautiful and bewitching, Lithuania's capital seduces visitors with its astonishing Old Town charm. Its chocolate-box baroque skyline littered with the spires of Orthodox and Catholic churches are intoxicating, decadent and fragile – so much so that Unesco has declared this, Europe's largest baroque old town, a World Heritage site. But there's more to this devilishly attractive capital than meets the eye. There is an underlying oddness that creates its soul. Where else could there be the world's only statue of psychedelic musician and composer Frank Zappa? “

We knew we were going to have a great start to our Baltic Bonanza with two nights in Vilnius when we landed at the airport to the sound of 'Call to the Post' followed by the announcement that our Ryan air flight had landed on time!

Vilnius old town lived up to its world heritage listing and we spent many hour just wandering around admiring the views on offer.

Yes it is all about the food! A great bakery practically next to where we stayed had the most amazing pastries.

We also visited The Genocide Victim's Museum, something we found both moving and upsetting.

The museum is housed in a building that was occupied from 1940 and 1991 by the NKVD and the KGB, with the exception of 1941 and 1944. During these years it was controlled by the Gestapo, whose role was to murder a majority of the city's Jewish population.

We used 'Vilnius in your pocket ' and found it to be a great guide to everything on offer in Vilnius. The writers also have a great sense of humor. Two of our favourite quotes are shown below.

“Crime is rampant in Lithuania, a great deal of it taking place inside the clandestine world of business and politics and consequently having little if no effect on the average visitor. “

“If it's Lithuanian and its got a lung then it probably smokes. “

Our Italian Eat, Pray, Love

In the words of Kelsey our wonderful house mate,” I am doing my own take on 'Eat, Pray, Love' while I am in Italy. I am going to eat good food, pray for good food and love good food!”

And that is exactly what we did! I think drink good wine and good coffee also needs to be thrown in there too.

Our amazing Italian picnic, complete with a 1.5 litre bottle of vino rosa that was passed around and skulled straight from the bottle!
Thankfully we ate before getting our hands dirty potato picking!
The village had one bar/coffee shop/pizza place and you could find us there most days before and after work. God bless you Richie!
Actually sometimes during working hours!

It wasn't all eating and drinking. We were in Montefegatesi to help Charlotte, a gorgeous English lady with her property management business and other jobs around her home.

Not ours unfortunately but one we cleaned!
I can see a gardening career in my future!

Our house had two bedrooms and was in the village. It was spread over three levels. The lounge and kitchen were on the middle level.

The view from our bedroom window on the top floor.

Montefegatesi is situated 842 meters above sea level in Northern Tuscany. It is the highest village in the region. We spent just over two weeks there and loved every minute of it!

This small car was typical in the village.
And here is Nick is demonstrating why small cars were so popular!
We adopted a local cat whose owners were away. We named him after a certain German dictator but called him 'Hits' in public. Check out his mo!

“I want to go someplace where I can marvel at something. Language, gelato, spaghetti. This is my no carb left behind experiment.”

-Eat, Pray, Love by Elizabeth Gilbert

Cologne was destroyed twice!

“Cologne was destroyed twice! Once when it was bombed during the war and the second time by the Architects who tried to rebuild it!”

– Juri, our Airbnb.com host

Just another Sunday in a Cologne park….
People looked at me strangely while I took this photo as if to say “What are you taking a photo of?” Reflections people, reflections.
The only touristy thing we did was to visit the cathedral and climb the many stairs to the top of the tower.
I just love stained glass windows…

Not sure why one is white and not the others?

I like the gargoyle he is putting a stake through in this one…

Some street art we loved!

We'd like to sincerely thank our friends Nathan, Niamh and their three kids Johnathon, Benjamin and Matthew for their hospitality. We really enjoyed catching up and look forward to seeing them in Australia next time they are there.

“Some tourists think Amsterdam is a city of sin, but in truth it is a city of freedom.”

John Green

Countless coffees, two wonderful walking tours, fries in a cone, picnic lunches by the canal, cycling everywhere, walks in the red light district………..that pretty much sums up our four nights in Amsterdam!

As this is a 'PG' rated blog, this little guy is the only thing from our tour of the 'red light district' we felt was appropriate.

We stayed at The Miljonairstlye B and B which is located at the back of a real estate office. The rate includes the use of two bikes for the length of your stay and a great breakfast. The bathroom is shared with the room next door.

We did a 'Free'(pay what you can afford)city tour with New Amsterdam tours

We also did The Red Light District Tour with them. Both tours were excellent and we would thoroughly recommend them!
