Churches, Castro, Chilean hitchhikers and ferry crossings, our Semana Santa road trip

They only get the Good Friday holiday here but our family very generously gave us a car and let us take off on Thursday afternoon. We headed straight for Castro and checked in to the Palafito Hostel, an amazing hostel recommend to us by Britt.

These are the traditional houses in Castro called ‘Palafitos’ or stilt houses.

We visited Isla Quinchao on Saturday. Nick had his first drive on the ‘other side’ and was the official driver on and off the ferries, thanks to his superior reversing skills.

Some of the lucky hitchhikers we gave a lift to on the weekend!

On Sunday it was another church followed by Isla Lemuy.

Would you give this woman the key to your church????

The churches on Chiloe were entirely constructed of native timber. Many of them are Heritage listed. More information can be found here.

On Sunday we slowly made our way back to Ancud, via dirt roads. Of course there were more beautiful little villages and churches to be seen!
